St. Efrem men choir

StEFREM is a Budapest-based vocal ensemble with a unique sound. The multi-award-winning group regularly performs across Europe, from London to Bucharest, and has also appeared in Africa, India, and South America. They have collaborated with renowned artists such as Yevgeny Nesterenko, Deva, Platon Karataev, and Amadinda. Since 2002, they have released 18 albums. Their rich and diverse repertoire includes Byzantine and classical works, crossover arrangements, and a cappella pop songs.

Hungarys most popular vocal ensemble was founded in 2002 under the name St. Ephraim Male Choir by Tamás Bubnó, recipient of the Liszt Prize as well as the titles of Merited Artist and Artist of Excellence. The group is named after Saint Ephraim the Syrian, a fourth-century theologian whom his contemporaries called the Harp of the Holy Spirit. The name reflects the Byzantine musical roots that defined the ensembles early repertoire.

During its first decade and a half, StEFREM primarily focused on Byzantine sacred music and on works by Hungarys greatest composers, including Franz Liszt, Béla Bartók, and Zoltán Kodály. Their rich and distinctive sound inspired many contemporary composers, who wrote pieces specifically for them. The choir members affinity for modern music also led them to create their own arrangements and compositions; as a result, much of their repertoire now consists of original works and adaptations.

Today, StEFREMs style blends crossover, classical, pop, and folk elements. Their own compositions and arrangements form the backbone of their programs. They continually experiment with new and surprising sounds, and their concerts often feature instruments played by the ensemble members themselvessuch as trumpet, accordion, guitar, various percussion instruments, and electronic sound-producing devices.

The seven-member ensemble has released 18 albums to date and has also produced numerous music videos. They maintain a strong presence on social media, where they have an enthusiastic and dedicated following.
